Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay
26 June 1838 - 8 April 1894
Perhaps best known for his inspiring verse, Bande Mataram , Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, was a Bengali poet, novelist, essayist and journalist. He along with Dinabandhu Mitra, a famous Bengali dramatist (Neeldarpan) were the first two graduates of the University of Calcutta in 1857. He later got a law degree.
Bankim Chandra started his career as the Deputy Collector and retired as the Deputy Magistrate. He is considered to have given form to Bengali prose though his first published writings were in English (Rajmohon's Wife). His later works of fiction were modeled after western novels. Durgeshnandini was the first ever Bengali novel. He published a literary magazine, Bongodarshan which contained serialized novels, stories, humorous sketches and essays. His novel Anandamath is loosely based on the "Sannyasi Rebellion" against the British and is the source of his verse "Bande Mataram".

English Translation of Bande Mataram
by Sri Aurobindo
Mother, I bow to thee!
Rich with thy hurrying streams,
Bright with orchard gleams,
Cool with thy winds of delight,
Dark fields waving Mother of might,
Mother free.
Glory of moonlight dreams,
Over thy branches and lordly streams,
Clad in thy blossoming trees,
Mother, giver of ease
Laughing low and sweet!
Mother I kiss thy feet,
Speaker sweet and low!
Mother, to thee I bow.
Urdu Translation of Bande Mataram
by Arif Mohammed Khan
Tasleemat, maan tasleemat
Tu bhari hai meethe pani se
Phal phoolon ki shadabi se
Dakkin ki thandi hawaon se
Faslon ki suhani fizaaon se
Tasleemat, maan tasleemat
Teri raaten roshan chand se
Teri raunaq sabze faam se
Teri pyar bhari muskan hai
Teri meethi bahut zuban hai
Teri banhon mein meri rahat hai
Tasleemat, maan tasleemat
Tere qadmon mein meri jannat hai
