Raja Rammohan Ray

May 22, 1772 - September 27, 1833

Rabindranath Tagore referred to Raja Rammohan Ray as the "Father of the Indian Renaissance". He was the founder of "Brahmo Samaj" and influenced every aspect of Indian life. A great scholar and reformer, he believed that education was necessary to implement social reform. He advocated the study of English, Science, Western Medicine and Technology and expended his money to promote these studies. He was instrumental in getting "Sati Daha" (a practice of a widow burning herself in her husband's funeral pyre) banned and demanded inheritance for women. He was a master of several languages including Bengali, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian. He died in Bristol, England in 1833.
